Cyclists invited to Old Brooklyn Pedal for Prizes on May 19th
by Jeffrey Sugalski
(Plain Press, May 2012) Cyclists have the opportunity to win more than $4,000 in prizes, including four brand new bikes, simply by exploring Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood by bicycle this spring. Old Brooklyn Pedal for Prizes, a free event open to all, will be held at Loew Park, 3121 Oak Park Avenue (turn East off of State Road) in Cleveland on Saturday, May 19 at noon.
A small grassroots group of Old Brooklyn residents and merchants has organized Pedal for Prizes every year since 2010 in celebration of Cleveland Bicycle Month. The event allows people from throughout the Cleveland area to discover its many amenities and favorite locally owned businesses in their community.
Upon registering at Loew Park the day of the event, cyclists of all ages and skill levels receive a map of twenty-two destinations and points of interest in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. They will ride their bikes to as many of these locations as they wish, having a punch card stamped at each location they visit.
Participants will return later in the afternoon to redeem their cards for tickets that they will enter into a Chinese-style raffle for a wide array of prizes. All raffle items have been donated by local businesses from Old Brooklyn and throughout Northeast Ohio.
Prizes raffled at last year’s Pedal for Prizes included two new bikes, a one-year membership to the downtown branch of the YMCA, Cleveland Indians tickets, $50 gift cards to Steelyard Commons, bike accessories and tune-ups, and restaurant gift certificates. Approximately 400 cyclists attended the event in 2011.
In addition to Old Brooklyn Pedal for Prizes, the all-volunteer team of the same namesake has organized neighborhood bicycle tours, hosted other events, and advocated for bicycle infrastructure improvements both in their community and Cleveland. Their work has been recognized by Cleveland City Council, and LiveCLEVELAND!, awarded the group with a 2011 Excellence in Cleveland Neighborhood Marketing Award.
